Lord of the Flies

I. Introduction/General information

II. Characters

The main characters were Ralph. Ralph has a mind of a leader that exempts him from the other boys. He was the chosen leader when they where trapped on the island. The problems of Ralph encountered was when his members were not focusing on their job but doing more in playing. There was this time when Ralph appoints the other boys to watched the fire to able to attract passing by ships but the boys were to busy playing and the fire suddenly ignite and burning down the whole forest. One of boys was gone and they thought he was burned to death.

I can identify the main character when Ralph complains to the boys that they should maintain the signal fire and build huts for shelter. I also experienced that kind of event in my life when I were still high school and we had this group and most of my group group mates voted me as their leader. However, when I told them that we had to do something in able to pass our subject. They didn't listen and just goofing around.

Supporting Characters

• Simon is a sensitive, shy, and very responsible to do some job that may be good for everyone.
• Piggy, from its name is a fat and suffering from asthma. Although he was like that, he is very intelligent and the source of all knowledge of the group.
• Jack was the leader of the choir boys when they were still in school. Violent and desiring for power. He was very mad when he lost the election on who will be the leader of the group.

III. Setting

The novel takes place during the time of world war II and a plane has been shot down to a island with a group of boys. This island has been isolated from the society which allowing boys to do their favorite habit without the parents vision. The setting of the novel is good because it is in the wild where a place which a city boy could explore the wild of the nature.

IV. Plot

• At the lagoon, Ralph thought that he was the only one on the island but he encountered another boy who is Piggy. A plane had crashed on the island carrying a group of boys. The boys on the plane lost each other. Ralph and Piggy look around the beach wondering where do the other boys gone. Both of them discovered a large pink shell which they could used it as some kind of trumpet to shift the attention of the boys and they gathered around. Having idea to be rescued, Ralph thought that they could make some fire to attract some attention passing by ships. The boys had an election on who will be the assigned leader of the group.

• Ralph assigned Jack as the gatherer of their food and Jack to made his own group in able to hunt. After then most of the boys were busy playing and not doing anything. Ralph was worried that they didn't catch a single animal. Some little boys spend their time through eating fruits and goofing around, and some boys had trouble by bad dreams. They mostly talked about the "beastie" and fear that the monster hunts in the darkness.

• Ralph was walking on the beach thinking about their life on the island.He decided to call a meeting and blow the horn in able to gather the boys. Ralph has been concern about the rules when the boys aren't following. One of the little boys speak up that he saw a beast while the others were thinking that it could hunt at night when there asleep. Military planes battled above the island which none of the boys didn't see it. A parachutist feel down from the sky unto the island and is dead to. His chute becomes tangled and some rocks and flaps in the wind creating a ghost like figure. When some of the boys wake up they tend to the fire to make the flames brighter. In the flickering light, they see the twisted form of the dead parachutist and mistake it as the beast monster. the who saw the figure rush back to the camp, wake Ralph, and tell him what they have seen. Ralph immediately calls for a meeting, which the boys who saw claimed that a monster is going for them. The other boys, was scared and horrified for the search of the monsters. They set out, armed with wooden spears, and only Piggy and the littluns remain behind.

• After that event the boys traveled through the mountain. Ralph saw an ocean which he thought that all the hoped of escaping the island of the boys were gone. The hunters found a pig to hunt, and they search for it. The hunters agree to track the boar because they were obsess to hunting, however, they failed to catch the pig. one of the boys  named Robert played as the pig. They dance, chant, and jab Robert with their spears, eventually losing sight of the fact that they are only playing a game. Beaten and in danger, Robert tries to drag himself away. The group nearly kills Robert before they remember themselves. When Robert told that they should use a real pig in the game next time, Jack replies that they should use a little boy instead. The boys laugh, delighted and stirred up by Jack’s idea. Ralph tries to remind everyone that they were only playing a game.

• Piggy and Ralph go to the feast with the hopes that they will be able to keep some control over events. At the feast, the boys are laughing and eating the roasted pig. Jack sits like a king on a throne, his face painted like a savage. fter the large meal, Jack extends an invitation to all of Ralph’s followers to join his tribe. Most of them accept, despite Ralph’s attempts to dissuade them. At the camp, Jack rules with absolute power. Boys are punished for no apparent reason. Jack ties up and beats a boy named Wilfred and then warns the boys against Ralph and his small group, saying that they are a danger to the tribe.The entire tribe, including Jack, seems to believe that Simon really was the beast, and that the beast is capable of assuming any disguise. Jack states that they must continue to guard against the beast, for it is never truly dead

• They had been a conflict between Jack and Ralph which most of the group were on Jack's side. Piggy cried as he watched both of them fight but Roger,however who is on the top of the mountain shoved a big chunk of rock falling through them which hit Piggy causing him to his death. Ralph ran away and hide on the forest. He planned to kill Jack using the white skull which he broke to used it as a weapon. Suddenly, Ralph looks up to see a naval officer standing over him. The officer tells the boy that his ship has come to the island after seeing the blazing fire in the jungle. Jack’s hunters reach the beach and stop in their tracks upon seeing the officer.Ralph was overwhelmed by the knowledge that he has been rescued, that he will escape the island after coming so close to a violent death. 

V. Theme

The novel tells that human beings must follow, act, and to be a good value for the group. This book learned me that being away from your love ones and other things, we must cooperate and be responsible to one another.

VI. Evaluation

The book was really good. It was fun to read it because it was so adventurous, but sometimes boring. However, the best thing I like about the story is when they fight for themselves to able to survive.
